Moving your website off Wix without losing your search traffic
Wix does not give you a one-click export of a whole site. You rebuild the site somewhere else, and the main way to keep your search traffic is to make sure every old address points to its new home. Here is the plan.
Step 1: Take inventory before you touch anything
- Open your live site and list every page address (URL) in a spreadsheet. Check your sitemap at yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml if you are not sure.
- In Google Search Console, open the Performance report and note which pages get the most clicks. Those are the pages you protect first.
- Screenshot your current page titles and descriptions, or copy them into the same spreadsheet.
Step 2: Export what you can
What you can get out varies by plan and by feature, so check each item in your own dashboard.
- Contacts, form submissions and store orders: usually exportable as CSV from the relevant dashboard.
- Products: the Products area has an export option. Digital products may not be included.
- Blog posts: there is no full blog export. Third-party guides describe using the blog RSS feed or a WordPress importer, and results are partial (often the most recent posts, sometimes without images). Plan to check every post by hand.
- Images: download them from the Media Manager and keep the originals.
- Design and layouts: these do not move. Expect to rebuild the look on the new platform.
Step 3: Build the new site with the same addresses if you can
The easiest redirect is the one you never need. If your old page was /about-us, try to make the new page /about-us too. Where that is not possible, write down the old address and the new one side by side.
Step 4: Redirects (301s)
A 301 redirect tells Google and visitors that a page has permanently moved. Redirects must be set up on the server that answers for the old address, so the cleanest approach depends on how you move your domain (next section).
- If you stay on Wix for a while, Wix has a URL Redirect Manager. You can add single redirects, group redirects, and import up to 500 at once from a CSV. Wix says you cannot redirect the homepage with that tool.
- If your new host controls the domain, add the redirects there using its redirect settings or a redirect plugin.
Step 5: Domain transfer or just repoint DNS?
These are two different things.
- Repoint DNS: the domain stays registered with Wix, and you change the DNS records so the name points to your new host. It is quick and reversible. Good for the cutover.
- Transfer the domain: you move the registration itself to another registrar. In Wix, use Domains, then Transfer away from Wix. You get an authorization code by email, and the domain must be unlocked. Some domains cannot transfer within 60 days of registration or a previous transfer. Do this after the new site is stable, and keep auto-renew on until it completes.
Do not cancel your Wix plan until the domain is fully moved, or your site and any email on that domain may stop working.
Cutover checklist
- Lower your DNS TTL a day ahead if your provider allows it.
- Launch the new site on a temporary address and click through every important page.
- Confirm redirects return a 301 by loading old addresses in a browser.
- Point DNS to the new host.
- Submit the new sitemap in Google Search Console.
- Watch the Pages and Performance reports for errors over the next several weeks. A short dip while Google re-crawls is normal.
- Fix any 404 pages that still show traffic by adding a redirect.
